Overlooking the popular village of Castleton with its caverns, caves and tea rooms, Mam Tor is at the boundary of White Peak and Dark Peak countryside, where geology and geography excel themselves. Earlier Bronze Age remains have been found of a tumulus or burial ground on the summit of Mam Torwhere the trig point is located. Excavations have unearthed the remains of hut circles and pottery showing that the fortification was probably a substantial settlement orvillage. It is also possible to see the remains of a defensive ditch from the Iron Age hill fort which once stood on this high hilltop. As you look at the exposed east face ofMam Tor, you can clearly make out the various horizontal strata of shale and sandstone. Mam Tor’s shivering mountain title is due to the fact that it is constantly and progressively sliding down the hillside. ‘The Shivering Mountain’, otherwise known as Mam Tor is not really a mountain, but one of the Peak District’s famous landmarks and highest peaks. Allow 3-4 hours to complete this walk at a moderate pace, allowing for rest stops to take in the views.Ĭastleton has a wide selection of pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops. Be aware that the opening section through Cave Dale is quite rocky and follows the bed of a stream so is often wet underfoot, as is a short section on the way back down from Hollins Cross.
For the most part it uses clearly-marked trails and hill paths, with some country lanes. From there it treks up on to Mam Tor and along the iconic Great Ridge, from where there are magnificent views of the Hope Valley and Edale Valley, before descending back into Castleton. On the way it climbs through the hidden gorge of Cave Dale, offering a wonderful perspective of Peveril Castle.
